Linking your NIN to your Glo number is absolutely important if you do not want the telecom company to disconnect you from the network.
This is in compliance with the directive of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which says that all GSM subscribers in the country must link their numbers to their National Identity Number (NIN).
The move by the NCC comes as the government tries to streamline the identity of users of telecom services in the country using their registered SIM cards.
According to authorities at the NCC, a telecom subscriber can link up to six numbers to their NIN. Since Glo is one of the popular telecom operators in the country, it is natural to expect that many of their subscribers want to know a quick way of linking their Glo SIMs to their National Identity Number (NIN).
What is NIN?
NIN stands for National Identity Number. It is issued to Nigerians by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The document bears the user’s photo and other personal details such as their date of birth. Nigerians can register for NIN at any of the offices of NIMC nationwide. In view of the increased demand for the document, the commission has commissioned more registration centres. They accomplished this by issuing licenses to entities for the purpose of registering people for NIN.
To many Nigerians, NIN has become an important document, not just because it is needed to continue having access to telecommunication services in the country, it can be used as a standard ID just like a permanent voter’s card, international passport or drivers’ license.
The Options Available for NIN Linking
There are several options available if you want to link your NIN to your Glo number. You can even walk into any Glo World centre to do this, but this is not very convenient. Most of the Glo World offices usually have many customers that have one issue or the other to attend to, so using this option would demand a lot of time. Moreover, the process of NIN linking is simple enough not to warrant moving around for it. SIM card sellers can also help you do this but this comes at a cost. Some SIM sellers charge more than 1000 naira to do this for people. So knowing how to link your number yourself saves you the inconvenience of searching out someone to do it for you. It also saves you money and time.
How To Link Your NIN To Your Glo Number
Here is a step-by-step approach to link your Glo number to your NIN. According to an update released by GloWorld, subscribers to the network can link their National Identity Number to their Glo number using a USSD code. This USSD code effectively pairs the user’s number with their NIN.
To link a Glo number with a NIN, simply input “UPDATENIN NIN FirstName and LastName” and then send to 109 on the Glo SIM that the person wants to link their NIN to. This means that if the person’s name is Jane Doe, and their NIN is 98765432111, they have to send “UPDATENIN 98765432111 Jane Doe” to 109 for their Glo SIM to be linked to their National Identity Number (NIN).
How To Check Your NIN Using Glo Number
In case the user doesn’t have their NIN handy, they can retrieve the NIN using their Glo number by typing the USSD code *346#. This USSD code will display the NIN that they already registered with the agency. They can now proceed to link it with their Glo line using the process already explained in the previous paragraph.
Some Important Points To Note
While linking your SIM, be sure that the NIN that you’re using actually belongs to you. Linking your Glo number with a NIN that belongs to someone else would make it practically impossible for you to retrieve your SIM using a Welcome Back pack. The reason for this is that the photograph in the NIN document will not match your real image. Furthermore, bearing in mind that you can link up to 6 numbers to a NIN, linking your numbers to different NINs implies that no one is sure of your identity. If there are issues associated with the people that you used their NIN to link your Glo number or any other number for that matter, you could be implicated. The bottom line is, be sure that the NIN used for any important numbers actually belongs to you.
