The famous comic actor, popularly known as Baba Suwe, started his acting career at 18 years of age, when he was in form four before he dropped out of school.

He discovered his passion for acting, according to him, when Baba Mero and his squad came for a play in the children’s boarding school in Osogbo. After the stage play, Baba Suwe and his neighborhood friends like Mufitau Ilumoka, Sola Taiwo, and others, got drums and other musical instruments to make their first show at Amuta playing ground in Lagos, Island.

Although it was a free show, this show, according to him, made him fulfilled. This event gave birth to his brand name, Baba Suwe.

Family

He was born on the 22nd of August 1958 into the family of Pa and Mrs Omidina, he was 63 years old when he died in November 2021. His father had three wives but he was the only child of his mother. He was born in the Ikorodu Local Government area of Lagos State, Southwestern Nigeria, but he grew up in Lagos Island, Inabere Street, Nigeria.

His father sold eyeglasses and his mother was a trader, so he had a humble beginning. Mr. Omidina died on November 22, 2021 and he was buried on Thursday, November 25, 2021. Baba Suwe is survived by children;Adesola Morenikeji Omidina, a film maker and CEO of Twenty-second Global studio; Halimat Omidina, Okiki Omidina, and Akanni Sherif Omidina, a medical practitioner, grandchildren, his mother and family members.

Education & Career

He started his elementary education at Jamaitul Islamia Primary School in Lagos and finished at Children’s Boarding School in Osogbo.

He proceeded to Adekanbi Commercial High School in Lagos State for his secondary education, but he wrote and obtained his West African School Certificate at Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo, Osun. While he was still in secondary school, he joined a group known as the Osumare theatre group. They acted in a stage titled Baoku. This play publicized them. They were invited to perform at LTV8. Because of their brilliant performance, they were invited to NTA channel 7. Eventually, they were invited to the National Theatre for a 10-minute performance.

From the theatre, they performed on the station. From then, Baba Suwe became popularly known. Baba Suwe didn’t attend any institution for professional training in acting; he was born with the talent of putting smiles on people’s faces naturally.

Baba Suwe became more prominent after he featured in the movies Omolasan in 1971 and Iru Esin in 1997. He also featured in some other movies; Ba o ku, Oju oloju, Baba Londoner, Ko tan sibe, Elebolo, Aimasiko Eda, O koja ofin, Owo laso oge, Ito funfun, Erueleru, Obajobalo, O koja be, Ojabo Ko fo, April Fuulu, Perosoko e.t.c

Baba Suwe was a friend to many people. Some of his friends in the movie industry are: Yinka Quadri, Taiwo Hassan, Dele Odunle, and Adewale Eleso, to mention a few.

Baba Suwe was wrongfully accused of ingesting cocaine by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in 2011, and he was detained for 24 days before being released. He was later acquitted of the offense by the court, and he was entitled to a compensation of 25 million naira, which he did not receive. This ordeal affected his career in that he couldn’t be featured in any movie for some time. This ugly episode also affected his health because of the physical, mental, and physiological torture he went through.

Since that time, he had been suffering from a partial stroke. His health worsened in 2019. He was treated at LUTH before he flew to Rhode Island in the United States for better treatment.

Wife

He got married to Monsurat Omidina, also a theatre practitioner and Nollywood celebrity, popularly known as Kenkenlewu in 1995. She died in 2009.

Ayodele, aka Suwe, was Baba Suwe’s alleged first wife. She stayed with him in the hospital before he gave up the ghost.

Mr. Omidina was truly an accomplished actor and a talented comedian.
