Do you use the MTN network, and want to know how to share data? Well, you are on the right page. In this piece, we shall take you through what data sharing means and how to go about it on the MTN network. Let’s get into it!
First, we need to understand what it means to share data. This literary means that you take part of the data on your phone and you send it to another person. For instance, if you have 600MB worth of data, you can decide to share 100MB out of it and send it to a friend. Note that this must be to another MTN user.
MTN Data Gifting
While we understand this process as sharing data, on the MTN platform, it is called MTN data gifting. MTN data gifting is the umbrella name for the service that enables you to request data from another MTN user, buy data for another user and share some data with another MTN line from your data balance. This service of data gifting is available to all MTN users whether new or old. Since we are only concerned about sharing data in this piece, we retain our focus on how you can share data.
At the moment, the highest amount of data you can share in a day is 1GB. The amount of data you can share at a go can be 50MB, 100MB, 200MB, or 500MB. The maximum number of times you can share in a day is twice. You are also required to have a minimum of 50MB data balance after sharing the data for the data sharing to be a success. So, when you try to share data, and the remaining balance will be less than 50MB, it won’t go through.
How To Share Data
Having understood what data sharing is and the conditions that surround it, it is pertinent to know how it is been done. Generally, there are two ways to share data on the MTN network. Please see the ways with their respective steps below;
Through USSD
- Dial *131*7*1# on your MTN line from where you want to share the data
- A prompt will come up asking for the recipient’s number. That is the number you want to share data with it. Enter the number and tap send
- Another prompt will come up with the list of data amounts that you can share, enter the corresponding number of the data amount you want to share, and tap send
- A confirmation prompt will come up which will contain the number and the data amount. Once you confirm the data transfer, it will go through.
Through the MTN Mobile App
The mobile app to use for this is myMTNapp. If you don’t have it already, simply go to your app store to download and install it. Launch the app and enter your MTN number. You will receive a one-time password (OTP) through SMS. Log into the app with the OTP. After you are logged in, please follow the steps below to share data;
- At the base of the app, navigate to the right-hand side where you can see three dots, and click on the dots.
- A menu list will come up, look out for the caption “share and borrow” and then click on “share airtime/data” under the caption.
- Another page will come up, click on “data” to share. If you don’t have enough data, a prompt will ask you to buy data but if you have enough, it will take you to another page
- Enter the number you want to share data with followed by the amount of data you want to share.
- Confirm the details and confirm the data share.
Things To Note When Sharing MTN Data
- Shared data takes precedent in usage even if you have active data when you receive the data
- You can not roll over a shared data
- You cannot share from any data plan outside daily, weekly, and monthly data plans
- The expiry date of the shared data will be the same as it is on the line of the person sharing it.
- If you have multiple data bundles, you will only be able to share from the bundle with the latest validity
With this, I believe you now understand data sharing on MTN and how to go about it. Please try out these steps and share your experience in the comment section below.
