Her parents were from Itoku, Abeokuta south local government in Ogun state, Nigeria. They had four children, of which she was the last child and the only female.

Eighteen years after moving to Nigeria, Asa returned to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a music artist at the IMFP school of Jazz music.

Asa grew up surrounded by music and artistry as both her parents were cinematographers. Her musical influences came from the collection of great music her father had gathered from his work as a cinematographer. These included Nigerian, American, and African musicians such as Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, King Sunny Ade, Miriam Makeba, and others.

Asa drew inspiration from all these music to her own unique sound.

Career

In 2002, at 20 years old, Asa moved to France to study jazz at the IMFP school of jazz music in Paris. At school, she impressed her instructors so well that they encouraged her to follow through with her dreams and become a recording artist right away because she was ready and needed no schooling for that.

Two years later, she was back in Nigeria. There, she met Janet Nwose, her friend and manager, who introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, who later produced her first studio album Asa (Asha).

In Nigeria, she released Her first single, “Eyé Adaba,” which started getting her music some attention and airplay.

This aided her quick sign into the record label Naive Records.

Soon after signing her record deal with naive records, she collaborated with producer Cobahams Asuquo, Benjamin Constant, and Christopher Dupouy to produce her first platinum-selling album, Asa. The album’s release launched Asa into stardom as her album was charting radios across Africa, Europe, and Asia. The self-titled song won the prestigious French Constantin Award in 2008 after Asa was voted by a jury of 19 music-industry specialists in Paris as the best fresh talent out of 10 singers or groups.

For Asa’s second album, she collaborated with the french composer Nicolas Mollard to produce “beautiful imperfection.” The lead single of the album, titled “Be my man” was released a few weeks before the whole album to set the pace for the album’s release on the 25th of October 2010.

Beautiful imperfection went platinum in 2011, and by 2014, it was reported that it had sold over 400,000 times worldwide.

In August  2014, Asa released her third studio album, Bed of Stone, which contained singles like” Dead Again, ‘Moving on,” “satan be gone” and “the one that never comes.” The next year, she went on a world tour from 2015 to 2017.
